Holidays at my home are never what people call "normal" and my family's holiday movie choices reflect that. Christmas means watching Bram Stoker's Dracula (all that red blood on white snow feels like Christmas) and Thanksgiving is all about watching The Godfather (the movie is all about family). So of course Easter at my house includes watching movies that may be a little outside the Easter movie "box". With that said, here is a short list of The Geek Magnets Top 5 Easter Movies:
#5 Alice in Wonderland/Alice/Donny Darko. Alice is my favorite retellings of the
Alice in Wonderland story. Of course you could always watch Alice in Wonderland
with all its talking flowers and white rabbits but if you are looking for a
more ass kicking and mature theme go for Alice. Donny Darko has a darker
"down the rabbit hole" story with a wonderfully creepy rabbit that
will probably traumatized some poor child for life. I was actually at a
Halloween party once where a person dressed as a scary white rabbit and successfully
sent a small child into a full mental melt down. I wish I could have been there
to see how that kid faired when Easter came around. I myself have a strained
relationship with the Easter Bunny.
#4 Pushing Daisies. I
spent years in Catholic school classes and what I learned about Easter is that
it is all about food, being colorful, fasting, and people coming back from the
dead. This T.V. Show fills all those requirements. Give this adorable show a
chance. Chuck is brought back from the dead by her good friend Ned who runs a
pie shop. While one touch brought her back to life, a second touch from Ned
would cause her to die again and never come back to life. Together they solve mysteries and fight
crime. It is a colorful, magical, and wonderful world that is heaps of fun.
#3 Aliens/Alien Resurrection.
Best Easter eggs ever! Maybe
the Aliens aren't as cute as bunnies but since I think of bunnies as being
vicious little creatures, it is an easy association for me. The Aliens sure do
breed like rabbits and the themes of fertility, rebirth, and resurrection fit
with the spirit of Easter.
#2 The Dark Crystal. A
child of a persecuted people is destined to save mankind from the horrible
world created by greed and fear. Ok, maybe this one is a bit of a reach but
Fizzgig is sort of like a bunny, right? Sure you could try to hit more on the
nose and go for "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe", but I feel
the Dark Crystal give the same overall theme with more feeling. The message is more subtle and the
characters that suffer and make the sacrifice are more relatable. The movie is also
about self-sacrifice and the chance for a new, possibly better, world to rise
from the ashes of the old world. I just like the movie, and I think it works
for Easter. I also think that the podlings look like a fun crowd to party with.
#1 Jurassic Park. So I
know that Easter is traditional fluffy bunnies and fuzzy chicks, but I think
that Jurassic Park fits the bill in so many ways. Easter really is about
celebrating fertility, about rebirth, and for some people it is about
resurrection. What could be more appropriate than dinosaurs being brought back to
life. And although man tries
to stop them from being fertile, "nature finds a way". Nothing can be more Easter(ish) than
when they find the hidden empty dinosaur eggs.
