We gather here today to remember The Lost World. Canceled
young, it gave us more adventure in its 3 years than many shows could in 30.
You live on in syndication and forever in our DVD collections, cancelled, but
never forgotten.
Did you ever watch Gilligan's Island and think to yourself "I wish there were dinosaurs in this"? Well that is what the show The Lost World is like- Gilligan's Island with Dinosaurs, except it offers so much more than just Dinosaurs. This show gives you everything you could possibly want. It hits on every fandom.
Setting & Plot:
The Lost world is a loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story by the same name. We meet a band of adventurers as the follow a mysterious map to a plateau in the Amazon where Professor Challenger believes he will find dinosaurs still in existence. Escaping angry natives, their hot air balloon crash lands on the plateau. Here they not only find Dinosaurs but also countless untold dangers and unknown wonders. They soon encounter Veronica, a woman raised on the plateau and who lives in a pretty cool tree house. Now that they each have claimed whatever riches they were searching for, they are on a quest to find a way off the plateau and back to the "modern" world.
Characters:
Marguerite Krux
Marguerite is by far the best character in the show. She is pretty much a far less scrupulous turn of the century Lara Croft. Intelligent, greedy, and gorgeous you can always count on her doing the right thing when the right thing calls for some bad behavior. She is the most pragmatic person in the group although she can be a little too greedy for her own good sometimes.
Veronica
Veronica was raised on the plateau and is billed as the "Jungle Beauty". Running around in a knockoff of Raquel Welch's fur bikini, she kicks a fair amount of ass. Veronica is obsessed with finding her parents who disappeared when she was a small child. A skilled fighter and survivalist, Veronica is one cool chick.
Lord John Roxton
A big game hunter and adventurer, Lord Roxton serves as a protector to the team of explorers. He may be a gruff, rough and tumble man but he is also loyal and courageous. He and Marguerite have a cautious romantic affection for each other that is expressed through insults and sarcasm as well as a few vulnerable and tender moments. Braxton is the guy you want on your side in a dangerous situation. He is just as capable at killing an Apeman as he is at killing a Raptor.
Ned Malone
A Journalist who has no game and never gets laid even though the half naked jungle girl clearly wants to jump his bones. On the one hand he is wonderfully curious about the world around him and I applaud him for not wanting to cheat on the fiancé he will probably never see again (and who is likely already married to somebody else), but on the other hand his grade school romance with Veronica is annoying and his motivations fall flat against those of the other characters.
Professor George Challenger
While Marguerite is obsessed with riches, Challenger is just as obsessed with scientific glory. He sets out on this quest to make a discovery that will vindicate him and make his reputation in the scientific world. Often his ambition for scientific discoveries gets him into trouble. He claims his pursuit is for the betterment of mankind but there are some dark desires behind it all too.
Professor Arthur Summerlee
Here is a man so driven to prove Challenger wrong, and rub his nose in it that he treks through the jungle just to do it. A jolly old soul, Summerlee turns into a rather sweet character and balances out nicely against Challenger.
Some of my favorite Episodes are...
Season 1
Episode 3: More Than Human
The Plateau has Dinosaurs, Apemen, and everything in between. Right smack dab in the middle are the Lizardmen. This episode is like Planet of the Apes, except with Lizardmen, and set in Rome.
Episode 7: Blood Lust
Vampires! Of course there are vampires on the plateau, and now Roxton is overtaken with a lust for blood and a sexy vamp.
Season 2
Episode 2: Amazons
Sexy Amazons just want to use and abuse our poor guys.
Episode 5: Stone Cold
This Episode is like Dangerous Liaisons meets Mask of The Red Death. Our adventurers stumble into a castle where they are made to act out a deadly tale of greed, lust, and intrigue.
Episode 13: The Guardian
Remember those cute kids from the oasis in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome? Well imagine on the plateau being protected by Audrey 2 (The Little Shop of Horrors) and that will give you a good idea of where this episode is headed.
Episode 20: The Visitor
Veronica's old boyfriend is a Werewolf and soon her new man (Malone) may be one too.
Season 3
Episode 5: The Knife
The tale of Jack The Ripper is relived by our Adventurers.
Episode 9: A Witch's Calling
Sexy witches set out to do battle with Challenger and this new thing called "science".
Episode 13: Finn
Our adventurers take a trip through time to a Mad Max/Escape From New York kind of world.
