Who’s going to die next on The Walking Dead?

This week’s season 3 finale of The Walking Dead is bound to create some gratuitous deaths for our beloved (and not so beloved) characters.  So who’s next on the chopping block?  Let’s take a moment to analyze the data, shall we?

Rick – This show is Rick’s story.  As the protagonist, there’s no way he’s going to die.  Killing him would be like firing Tina Fey’s character from 30 Rock.  It’s just not going to happen.

Carl – If the last season has proven anything, it’s that children are not held sacred in the zombie apocalypse.  Killing off child characters like Sophia is a line that has already been crossed, and I don’t think the writers would shy away from doing it again.  However, although there is potential for a Carl death, it’s not likely.  The writers will probably keep Carl around to create a sense of purpose for Rick and to save more interesting father-son dynamic subplots for future episodes.

Hershel – Hershel is an old man with a missing leg.  Needless to say, Hershel’s days are numbered for sure; but will he meet his maker in the upcoming Woodbury-Prison showdown?  My thoughts are that they will probably keep him around as the voice of reason for the group.  Now that Dale is dead and Rick is kind of going bat shit crazy, a character with strong mental faculties and wisdom is definitely needed and most welcomed.

Andrea – How I wish Andrea would die.  Despite Andrea’s many shortcomings and the fact that she is probably going to have a brush with death in the Governor’s little chamber of torture, I don’t think the writers are ready to kill Andrea off just yet.  She is an interesting character that writers have enjoyed developing during this last season.  If she does die, I think she might die as a sacrificial lamb or martyr for the betterment of the group…. Kind of like Jesus?  The show will be aired on Easter after all.

Daryl – The writers wouldn’t dare murder this sacred cow.  If they did, I might just boycott the rest of the show.  After Merle’s death, I think there are more interesting plot elements designed for Daryl.  My personal theory is that he is going to go a little a crazy like after Sophia’s death.  We might even see a return of the infamous zombie ear necklace.

Glen – If Glen were to die, I would be very sad indeed.  I do think there is potential for this happening.  After all he’s a very likable character that the audience has come very close to in this last season, which is all the more reason why the writers might kill him.  His death would create a tragic ending to the Season 3 finale that will make us desperately crave more.  I admit, if they did kill him off, I would feel just as betrayed and saddened as the time I witnessed Wash’s death in Serenity.

Maggie – Hmmmm…. There is potential here, but I don’t think it’s likely.  The Glen – Maggie romance is too sweet for the writer’s to pass up.  Every show needs some kind of romance, and with Lori dead, the torch has now been passed to this little couple that could.  Who I really think is going to die is….

Beth – Yep! The sirens are ringing out that Maggie’s sister has got to go.  With her adorable singing voice and her crush on both Rick and Carl, the audience has fallen in love with this character, which may make you think that the writers would keep around for the next act.  However, the fact is that the writers haven’t found her important enough to develop her character at all, which makes it obvious to me that she is going to be zombie bait.   She also happens to die in the comic book around this time, which adds further proof to me that Beth’s days are numbered.

Carol – I’ve wanted Carol to die for a while.  And with war in the air, I think there is great potential for Carol to be reunited with her sweet Sophia.  Even though she’s had a few special scenes in Season 2, she hasn’t really demonstrated much added value to the group.  Nor has her character been developed that much.  As an audience it is clear that Carol has become a stronger person since season 1, but she is unlikely to be a badass anytime soon.  Those roles are already taken by strong female characters like Michonne and Andrea.

Michonne – I don’t think so.  This is one tough cookie that’s not going to go down without a fight.  Michonne will die at some point, but her death is bound to be more epic and glorious than what remains of this season.  My guess is that she is bound to stay to live through many more episodes to come.

The Governor – Thankfully bad guys do tend to die in The Walking Dead (ex. Shane).  Even if the Governor dies (which is very likely), he will unfortunately take a lot of innocent folks down with him.  If there is any sense of justice at all, I hope that the Governor dies a horrible and painful death.  My guess is that I will get my wish in the next episode.

Milton – Milton’s days are numbered.  He outright defied the Governor in the last episode.  I have a feeling that Milton, wimp that he is, will probably be the one to save Andrea but will end up dying in the process.

Baby Judith (aka Ass-kicker) – If you read the graphic novels like I did, you would know that Baby Judith doesn’t live very long to enjoy the zombie apocalypse.  In fact, she dies during this final battle.  As much as I don’t want the baby to die, her presence isn’t making things any easier on the group.  Also, the producers of the show might just kill her off so they don’t have to deal with a baby on set.   It would be nice for Baby Judith to live, but I’m not sure how strong her chances are surviving this battle.  My guess is that her chances are about 50/50.
