Science fiction has a long history of predicting the future. Some of science fiction's earliest predictions have been Jules Verne's prediction of submarines (from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and Arthur C. Clarke's prediction of space tourism (from 2001: A Space Odyssey). Star Trek seems to have an even better success rate when prognosticating the future.
