My first memory of watching a movie with my Dad is of me
being 4 years old and watching Night of the Living Dead, which I later figured
out isn't really a children's movie. Actually, much of my love-of-all-things-nerdy
came from the movies I watched with my Dad when I was growing up. Today, I can't think
of any better way to celebrate Father's Day than by sharing a quality movie
marathon with my Dad and watching one (or all) of these nerdtastic movies:
#5 The Incredibles. When I was a kid I saw The Godfather and wished that my Dad could have been in the Mafia. However my second choice of "dream Dad jobs" was for my Dad to be a superhero. Fortunately, the Incredibles is all about what it would be like for Dad to actually be a superhero. The Incredibles is a great movie that just really hits home when it comes to understanding what a family, albeit a family with super powers, is like. Really this story is about a man learning how important his family is to him and being able to share his passion of being a super hero. I guess you could say ‘the family that slays together, stays together.’
#4 Sweeney Todd. My Dad loves musicals, so what could be more appropriate than
a musical about a homicidal father? (Side note: Why hasn't The Shining been
made into a musical yet?) Sweeney Todd is the charming tale of a bloodthirsty
father who would stop at nothing to get his long lost daughter back. Sure the
movie is full of murder, cannibalism, and cruelty but at its core it is really
about a father bravely facing seemingly insurmountable odds to save his
daughter from her cruel captor. I'm going to go ahead and nominate the Demon
Barber of Fleet Street for Dad of the Year.
#3 Star Wars: Episodes 4-6. Star Wars is a Hero's Journey but it is also a Father &
Son saga. From the point when Darth Vader tells Luke that he is his father all the
way up to Luke lovingly taking off a dying Vader's helmet, this movie is
fraught with Father/Son relationships. Darth Vader is really just a regular Dad
trying to get his rebellious son into the family business. Interesting fact: "Vader"
is Dutch for "Father" and "Vater" is German for
"Father".
#2 Armageddon. This movie makes me cry, but it is totally worth it. In Armageddon Bruce Willis plays a Dad
who would do anything to give his daughter a beautiful wedding, even save all
of humanity. I kind of feel like this movie is the badass version of Father of
The Bride.
#1 Willow. Please tell me you have seen this gem of a movie. Before The Hobbit (the movie),
there was Willow. If you haven’t
yet seen Willow, here’s a little preview: Willow is an awkward, brave, selfless
dad that goes on a grand adventure to save an adorable baby who is destined to
save the world. Throughout the movie he is alternately bottle feeding baby
Elora Danan and fighting to the death for her. Of course the movie is only made
better by the badass buffoonery of Madmartigan (played by Val Kilmer), the
magical mishaps of Willow and Fin Azriel, the sword wielding of Sorsha, and the
priceless bumbling of the Brownies. Overall, it is just a great movie and
Willow encompasses all the qualities of a great Father.
