Whether you are an alien, AI, or human the chances are that
you have a mother. I have an awesome mother who, although she claims she isn't
a nerd, loves to do nerdy stuff with me. One of our favorite things to do is
just hangout and watch nerdy movies. So this Mother's Day, May 12, 2013, will likely involve
Rocky Road ice cream, pizza, and watch one of the Geek Magnets top 5
"Mother Approved" Mother's Day movies:
#5 Brave. Ok, I know this is an obvious choice but it is such a damn
good one. Not only is this finally a Disney princess movie that doesn't leave
me looking for my glass slipper but it is also a really great movie about
mother and daughter relationships. I went to see this movie the first time with
a friend and then we both came back a second time with our mothers. Merida is
cool and she really makes me want to break out that hunting bow I have, and
never use, to shoot things with. Queen Elinor is just a wonderful, cool, and
powerful woman trying to connect with her daughter. Of course it has a happy
ending but to get there the characters have to go through a magical version of
family counseling. I'm sure every Mother and Daughter who can relate to this
feel good and slightly guilty as some of the stuff hits too close to home.
#4 Kill Bill 1 & 2. This movie is a great option for those of us who are really
into martial arts films and who also who have moms who could kick our ass. The
movie starts with two moms beating the crap out of each other and it just get
better from there. Beatrice's life changed when she found out she was going to
be a mother, it changed again when she thought that had been taken away from
her, and it changed once more when she finds her daughter. Hidden behind all
the blood, guts, and cries of anguish is a really touching story about how
motherhood changes one woman's life.
#3 Children of Men. In a future without children society breaks down as they
realize that there is no future without children. Fair warning, this movie
makes people cry. Full disclosure, this movie makes ME cry. The story revolves
around Theo as he simply goes through the motions of life. He is an unlikely
hero who rises to the occasion when he is confronted with something he hasn't
seen in years, a woman who is about to have a baby. The movie is pretty great
and the last 10-15 minutes of the films are the most touching as you see how
young Kee and her child change the world around them.
#2 A.I: Artificial Intelligence. Once a year I allow myself to be sucked into watching this
movie with my Mom. AI is one of favorite films and the only thing I really have
against it is that it makes my cry so damn much. However, it should be noted
that I also cried while watching Lilo & Stitch, so I may just be a big sap.
This movie is all about a little robot boy named David who is searching for a
way to become a real boy so that his human mother will love him. It also
doesn't hurt that Jude Law is a cute robo-gigilo in this movie. I love the
grown up Pinocchio story that is going in this movie.
#1 Terminator 2: Judgment Day. One day I was watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor
Chronicles with my mom and I asked her "Mom, if I was the future savior of
mankind would you have killed that innocent human in order to possibly protect
my secret identity?" And because I have a super awesome Mom, she said yes
right away. While the first Terminator movie is all about romance, the second
is about a bad ass mother who will do whatever it takes to protect her
kid...... and save the world. Sure the movie has the friendship component with
John and his Robo-bodygaurd, but Sarah Connor totally steals the show. With
combat boots and a can-do attitude she is a shoe-in for mother
of the year.
