Croods (March 22)
This movie looks like it’s another version of Ice Age but
with a human cast. It seems to have potential but it also doesn't seem fresh.
It has a 50/50 of being good chance in my book.
Evil Dead (April 5)
Remaking a
horror classic is always a risky thing to do. Reboots/remakes are really hit
and miss. So while I am willing to go see it I am going in expecting it to be
good but not great. Maybe it will surprise me.
The Dark Tower (May 13)
Stephen King fans rejoice! The book The Dark Tower has been
adapted into a film and I know a few nerds who are really looking forward to
this. There really aren't that many great adaptations of his books, which is
why I am conservative with my expectations for this movie.
Man of Steel (June 14)
I expect great things from Zack Snyder but his films tend to
be hit or miss which gives me pause about this newest film. Add to that the fact that the last
Superman film fell a bit flat and I am now full of apprehension about this
endeavor. The cast seems pretty good and I am excited to see Henry Cavil redeem
himself after Immortals. It could be amazing like Watchmen or a mess like
Sucker Punch.
Monsters University (June 21)
I really enjoyed Monsters Inc. and although I know prequels
usually don't work out too well, I am looking forward to seeing it. I am not
expecting it to be as good as the first film but it looks like it will
be a fun
movie and better than the other animated films slated to come out this year.
Lone Ranger (July 3)
Honestly I don't think the trailer is all that great and it
isn't what motivates me to watch this movie. The draw is that it is a big
screen & big budget film version of The Lone Ranger and that it has Army
Hammer (all 6'5 and sexy) and the rather whimsically inventive Johnny Depp. I
am going in expecting some good entertainment but I am not anticipating that it
will be neither man's best work.
Pacific Rim (July 12)
With the terribleness that was the Transformers franchise
and Battleship I am now just really skeptical. I enjoy Guillermo Del Toro's
work which gives me some hope that this will be a good movie.
Wolverine (July 26)
My favorite X-men is back and looking damn fine if I do say
so myself. Some of the X-men films
just fell flat and I am hoping that this one is great. Judging from past X-men film history,
this movie as a 50/50 chance of being good.
Elysium (August 8)
Will the lightning strike twice
for the writer and director of District 9? Well it sure as hell seems to have a
good chance. Elysium does have Matt
Damon in it and Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks. I am more than willing to give this movie a shot but I am
wary.
Kick Ass 2 (August 16)
The first Kick Ass movie accomplished the amazing task of
making us forget for a brief moment how bad of an actor Nicholas Cage is.
However the main character is annoying and the saving grace of the entire movie
was Hit Girl. I am really looking forward to seeing more of Hit Girl and I am
really looking forward to seeing Jim Carey just being the earlier/awesome version
of Jim Carey. However, I am anticipating watching this movie and just being
incredibly annoyed with Kick-Ass again, which may just be a matter of personal
taste. The Mother Fucker does look
like he will be a pretty cool villain though.
Oldboy (October 11)
Are we idiots? Is that why Hollywood
keeps taking fantastic foreign films and needlessly remaking them with American
actors? Are we incapable of reading subtitles? Do we really need another Oldboy
when I don't see how it can any better than the original. If it ain't broke,
don't fix it.
Carrie (October 18)
Horror movie remakes are hit and
miss. There is always a potential to do great but you are competing against a classic,
which more than likely implies failure. I like a good scare and I hated high
school so I will probably go see this movie.
The World's End (October
25)
I really like Shawn of
The Dead and I make it a point to watch all of Simon Pegg's movies but none
have been a hit with me since that funny zombie flick, although I have enjoyed
them all at varying levels. I want the magic back and I hope that this film
brings it.
Enders Game (November 1)
Hollywood seems to love screwing up awesome books. Just look
what they did to Starship Troopers. While they might get it right there is also
a chance that they might get it wrong and there will be a lot of nerdlings disappointed.
Listen up Hollywood, don't anger the nerdlings. I worry that this is going to
be turned into another Hunger Games debacle and I know quite a few people who
will be angry about this. I am definitely going into the movie with great
expectations but also with great apprehension.
Frozen (November 27)
This is supposed to be the movie that brings the Disney
Princes full on musical back in a big way. I'm talking "Beauty and The
Beast" way. Disney fans get excited! I hoping for a good story like Brave
with the amazing music of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and The Beast.
Fingers crossed.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December 13)
The last Hobbit film met with mixed reviews here at Geek
Magnet. Rainbow really liked it
and April strongly disliked. We do however have a pact to watch all the movies together
(it is a blood oath + pinky promise type of thing). Personally I am excited but
I understand the criticisms for the last film. Therefore I am willing to go
into next one with both geeky giddiness and a critical eye.
