The Super Bowl is here and I could care less. Really the
only sporting events I like are E-sport and maybe the Olympics. So while I
do partake tonight in the Super Bowl barbecues that come with living in a
Football state, I will blissfully be avoiding the actual game itself with all
things nerdy. While I am sure there are plenty of geeks out there who are
excited about the Super Bowl, I figure that there are probably just as many
people like me who really don't care for it. Here are Geek Magnet's top 5 Picks
of things to do instead of watching the Super Bowl.
#5. Nerd debates with friends. This happens to me all the
time, somebody makes a comment about a superhero or character that I like and
an animated argument begins. Hours later we are still having a good time arguing
over whatever started the conversation to begin with. So who would win if the
Justice league and the Avengers faced each other at the super bowl? Who wins if
the Hulk and The Thing are sumo wrestling. If Black Widow and Wonder Woman both
rode an electric bull (or a real one at a rodeo because they are awesome) who
would stay on longer? I guess sports can be fun when you add your own twist.
#4. Play Video games. Maybe you want to play through the
Dead Space and Bioshock games in anticipation of new releases or maybe you want
to call over a few buddies for some group gaming (which can also be turned into
drinking games). Maybe you are like me and will be StarCrafting the night away.
Headphones and a gaming marathon will make it easy to ignore the raucous that Football fans will be making tonight. Personally I'd rather listen to the screeches of the undead than than the exhausting cheers of the Super Bowl audience.
#3. Play Table Top games. Table Top games can easily take up
the entire span of the super bowl and allow you to taste victory on a more personal
level. Any Table Top game can also be turned into drinking game. Really nothing sounds cooler to me right now than be invited to play some Dungeons & Dragons.
#2. Watch Movies/T.V that are "sporty" but actually have
nothing to do with Football. My suggestions:
-STARZ's Spartacus series.
If you really need some sex and violence then this will give
you your fix.
-Death Race 2000
Bad drivers are rewarded in this movie.
-Battle Royal
Before there was The Hunger Games, there was Battle Royal. A
group of children sent to an Island where they must kill each other until there
is only one left.

-The Running Man.
All the pageantry of a Super Bowl but with a lot more risk
for death thrown in.
-A Knight's Tale
Jousting was a huge sport back in the medieval days and this
movie makes it cool again.
#1. Watch E-sports. Luckily for us all Iron Squid II
championships ended last weekend and you can watch all the glorious StarCraftiness
online. I personally watch coverage on Day 9's YouTube channel, his excitement
is close to that of a Mexican Football ("Soccer") Caster and I love
it.
